Welcome to the Supervisors’ Hub. This section provides everything you need to guide students through the new Extended Essay. The 2027 guide places strong emphasis on mentoring, ethical research, academic integrity and the development of independent inquiry skills.
The IB is offering a Nano Course to learn all about the new EE.
As a supervisor, your role is central in helping students navigate the process with confidence, focus and integrity.
One of the most important things we can provide during the EE process is genuine care. For most students, this is the biggest task they've taken on to date. Therefore, having compassion for them when they're struggling or confused, and ensuring that you display a genuine interest in what they're doing, will go a long way toward building a trusting supervisor-student relationship.
Actively Listen
When students express concerns or ideas, listen attentively. Nod, maintain eye contact, and ask follow-up questions to show you’re engaged.
Check-In
Schedule periodic meetings to discuss their progress, addressing any challenges they might be facing and offering support. Check their document or reflection space and ask them questions.
Encouragement
Acknowledge their hard work and effort, especially when they overcome obstacles. Simple affirmations can boost their confidence.
Feedback
Provide constructive and specific feedback on their work, highlighting strengths whilst gently guiding them on areas for improvement.
Open-Door Policy
Encourage students to come to you with questions or concerns at any time, making it clear that you’re approachable and available.
Empathy
Share your own experiences with challenges in academic work, showing that you understand their struggles and that it’s a normal part of the learning process. If you don't have any, I have plenty(!) you can share.
Share
Offer resources such as articles, books, or podcasts (anything!) that could help them with their research, showing that you’re invested in their success.
Celebrate Success
Acknowledge key achievements, whether big or small, to make students feel valued and recognised for their hard work.
Environment
Foster an environment where students feel safe and comfortable sharing their thoughts and concerns without fear of judgment.
Well-Being
Check in on their overall well-being, not just their academic progress, to show that you care about them as individuals.
