You will receive up to five hours of support from your supervisor across the entire Extended Essay process. This time includes both informal check-ins and the three mandatory formal reflection sessions.
These are short, flexible check-ins that happen throughout your EE journey.
Their purpose is to:
make sure you are on track
ensure your work is authentic and your research is your own
help you reflect on your planning and progress
allow you to ask questions and clarify expectations
offer process-based guidance (not subject teaching)
These meetings are part of your total supervision time.
You will have three compulsory reflection meetings with your supervisor:
Initial Reflection Session
This helps you begin with a clear understanding of your topic, pathway and research question.
Your supervisor will check that your topic is appropriate and that you are ready to start your investigation.
Interim Reflection Session
Held when you have made substantial progress in your research and drafting.
Your supervisor will help you reflect on your progress and ensure you understand what is needed to move confidently into completing your draft.
Final Reflection Session (Viva Voce)
This is your concluding conversation after submitting your final essay.
It focuses on the process of the Extended Essay, what you have learned and how you have grown as a researcher.
Reflective Statement
After completing all three meetings, you will write one reflective statement of up to 500 words on the RPF. This replaces the old multi-entry RPPF.
You will receive feedback on one complete draft of your Extended Essay.
During this meeting, your supervisor will:
give you general comments on the clarity and structure of your work
prompt you to strengthen your argument or analysis
highlight areas where you need to think more carefully
guide you on how to improve your organisation and reasoning
They will not edit, rewrite or correct your work.
Once you receive feedback, all revisions must be your own.
You receive support through:
informal check-ins
one initial reflection
one interim reflection
one final reflection (viva voce)
one round of draft feedback
All of this is included within your five hours of supervision.
