Use the interdisciplinary pathway only when one subject is not enough. Your question must require two IB subjects working together to answer it.
If one subject can address the topic independently, choose the subject focused pathway.
A successful interdisciplinary essay:
uses two IB subjects throughout the investigation
applies relevant concepts, theories and methods from each subject
integrates the subjects rather than treating them separately
develops one coherent line of argument
shows why a single discipline would give an incomplete or limited answer
Each interdisciplinary essay is situated within one of the following frameworks:
Power, equality, justice
Culture, identity, expression
Movement, time, space
Evidence, measurement, innovation
Sustainability, development, change
The interdisciplinary pathway is suitable if:
your proposed question genuinely requires two IB subjects
each subject contributes distinct and necessary analytical tools
the question is situated within one of the frameworks
disciplinary integration will strengthen your argument
